Language model
The AI model that understands and writes text. Often called an LLM, a large language model.
Knowledge base
The smallest unit of text a language model reads and writes. A word often becomes one or more tokens.
01Explanation
Language models do not read letter by letter or word by word, but in pieces called tokens. Common English words are often one token, while longer or less common words are split into several.
Tokens are also what many AI services count when they charge, and what decides how much text the model can keep in mind at once.
02In practice
For anyone using an AI assistant, tokens rarely need to show. They do explain why long conversations and large amounts of material cost more to run, and why material should be clear rather than large.
